Pre-marital

For the months leading up to your wedding day, the topic of conversation will often fall around the planning of your wedding date, talks about the dress, the cake, seating plans, flowers and all the arrangements that need to be made. In the midst of these decisions, it is important for you as a couple to always keep in mind that you are two unique individuals that need to stay in touch with one another on an emotional level. If only for this reason, a pre marriage program create the opportunity to talk about factors such as family of origin, expectations, role relationships and children which will influence your relationship and daily lives, long after the wedding day.

Often couples choose premarital cohabitation and feel as though they have already ironed out all the difficulties. Though this may be true to an extent and in certain areas, taking the time to make a deeper connection and create a better understanding within the relationship is beneficial to any couple- engaged, married, cohabiting or just seeing one another.

During the pre marital program, each partner has an opportunity to clearly define and share expectations within the marital relationship and understand those of their partner. Another important lesson to realise is that marriage as an institution matters, and how your marriage turns out depends on your own attitudes and actions. Premarital education produces a mindset that how a marriage turns out is not a matter of fate but in large measure is the outgrowth of decisions partners make and the actions they take every day for years to come.

Pre-marriage preparation is based on the reality that it's important to strengthen your relationship as well as prepare for future challenges and conflicts that everyone inevitably faces at some point in their marriage. The program is an attempt to help couples lessen vulnerability and risk in marriage by strengthening protective factors and weakening risk factors, it functions as an immunisation that boosts your capacity to handle potential difficulties.
